Due to pollution
of water and over population of fish species, out of about 88 species
of fish available in the Harike Pattan wetlands, only seven are
adequate to human health.
This was stated
by Prof M.S.
Johal of Panjab University, Chandigarh, at the launch of the two-day
seminar on `Wetland Conservation and Management: In view of Global
Climate Change' at Gurur Nanak Dev University on Tuesday.
He said the role
of fisheries in the evaluation of aquatic health of wetlands is very
important.
Over 10 research
papers would be presented during this seminar which will be attended
by about 40 experts.
Dean, Academic
Affairs of the University, Dr Raghbir Singh presided the event while
Dr Rajiv Kalsi from MLN College, Yamunanagar, Haryana, was guest of
honour.
Coordinator and
Head of Department Dr Anish Dua said February 2 is observed as Wetland
Day to educate the masses on their importance.
