Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj
Patil delivered the valedictory address on the closing day of the 13th
Punjab Science Congress held at Panjab University on the theme
‘Climate Change: Concerns and Solutions’.
“The need of the hour is to inculcate the right
mindset to tackle climate change. Respecting the eternal connection
between all things-living and dead-is the spiritual duty of every man
and it is only when this becomes a lifelong duty that there will be
any sustainable human and environmental development,” he said.
Dr Rakesh Tuli, director of National Institute
of Agricultural Biotechnology, Mohali, was the keynote speaker in the
valedictory session. An eminent biotechnologist, Dr Tuli talked on
genes and promoters for designing plants. Drawing extensively on
empirical data, he drew the attention of the gathering to the role
that genetic engineering can play in increasing crop yield.
