In a bid to
create awareness on the ramifications of climate change, the Society
for the Promotion of Science and Technology in India (SPSTI) will
organising a seminar on Climate, Carbon and Copenhagen at the English
Auditorium, Panjab University on February 17.
Punjab chief
secretary Subodh Aggarwal will inaugurate the seminar while Principal
Secretary, Environment, Government of Haryana, Dr G. Prasanna Kumar
will deliver the presidential address.
Key speakers at
the seminar include, Dr Prodipto Ghosh, an IIT alumnus and former
Union Environment Secretary, Dr Ashok Sahni, Professor Emeritus, INSA
senior scientist, Department of Geology, Panjab University and snow
and avalanche forecasting expert Ashwagosha Ganju, director, Snow and
Avalanche Studies Establishment.
Ashwagosha
Ganju's mountain metrology programme for the prediction of accurate
mountain weather forecast has facilitated safe movement of troops in
snow covered areas. SPSTI president and Haryana State Election
Commissioner Dharamvir said the society's seeks to help youth develop
a scientific temper and creativity. It also works to improve science
education programmes, especially at the school level.
"The seminar is
designed to sensitize them about climate change, its ramifications,
and engage them in proactive action," he said.
