CM REQUESTED RAMESH TO INCLUDE MORE RIVERS IN
THE PROJECT.
A Rs 190-crore
project for cleaning rivers in Punjab will be sanctioned soon.
Work will start with cleaning of the Sutlej in Jalandhar and Phillaur,"
said Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent
charge) Jairam Ramesh.
He was talking
to mediapersons here on Friday on the sidelines of the fifth Bt
Brinjal public consultation meeting organised by the Union Ministry of
Environment and Forests in collaboration with the Centre for
Environment Education.
Ramesh said he
had a discussion on Thursday with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal
on cleaning of rivers. He stated that Badal requested him to include
more rivers in the project.
"Badal also took
up the issue of rise in the number of cancer cases in Bathinda. I
assured him that a team of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)
will go there in the next few days and submit a report," said Ramesh.
The minister
said Punjab had been asked to prepare an action plan to tackle issues
concerning increasing pollution in the next three months, adding that
the pollution control board would extend all help in this regard.
