The Punjab State Council for Science and
Technology (PSCST) has awarded Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Kharar,
for the work done in the field of environment protection.
School principal and eco club in charge Gurdeep
Singh received the award. The school was given a certificate of
appreciation and a memento for managing solid waste, putting up
rainwater harvesting project and recycling wastewater in the school.
With the help of Rotary Club, the school has
undertaken the rainwater harvesting project wherein 700 to 800 feet
deep pits have been dug for recharging ground water, said the
principal.
He added that the water used for drinking by
students and staff members was recharged by first collecting it into a
water body and later using the same to water plants.
Similarly, the biodegradable waste is collected
into the pits and churned out as manure used for the plants on the
school premises.
The council has also recommended the school’s
name for the national-level green school project.
