Scientific breeding of livestock to increase the
milk yield is catching up in the state.
Semen production has seen a growth of 178% in
the last fours year from 19.26 lakh semen straws in 2007-08 to 34.20
lakh straws in 2010-11.
Punjab Livestock Development Board (PLDB) has two semen banks at Nabha
and Ropar.
Encouraged by trends, banks have sought a grant
of Rs 8.50 crore from the state government for infrastructure
development with an aim to double yearly semen production.
The semen bank at Nabha produced over 27 lakh
semen straws last year against the target of 24 lakh straws. “Our
semen bank at Ropar produced 6.50 lakh straws and is eyeing to produce
8.50 lakh units,“ said Mukhwinder Singh, deputy director animal
husbandry.
The bank at Nabha is spanned over an area of 145
acres, having 205 buffalo bulls and 56 cow bulls. HTC
